# Bank Statement Reconciliation on the Kognitos Platform

> Watch Kognitos compare a bank statement attached to an email against an SAP GL — and email the controller a side-by-side report whether the balances reconcile or not.

## What's in this video

Nick from Kognitos walks through bank statement reconciliation as part of the record-to-report (R2R) process. Two runs are shown: a clean reconciliation and a deliberate mismatch, so you can see how Kognitos handles both paths.

## The R2R pipeline

- **Trigger**: an email arrives with a bank statement (Excel in the demo). An API call could also start the process.
- **Bank statement extraction**: Kognitos extracts the statement table and identifies the ending balance.
- **ERP pull**: Kognitos retrieves the corresponding SAP file and extracts the cumulative GL balance.
- **Side-by-side compare**: the two balances are compared inside Kognitos.
- **Controller notification**: an email is sent to the controller with both files attached so they can review the comparison firsthand.

## What happens when balances don't match

In the second run the ending balance comes through as $11,650 while the SAP GL shows $11,650,166. Kognitos detects the mismatch and emails the controller an “unable to reconcile as of today” notice with both the ERP table and the bank statement attached — so the controller already has the source documents in hand when they start investigating.

## FAQs

**Q: Which systems does this Kognitos bank statement reconciliation touch?**

Inbound email (with the bank statement attached as an Excel file), SAP (for the GL table), and outbound email (the controller notification). The same process could be kicked off via API instead of email.

**Q: What does Kognitos send the controller when balances reconcile?**

An email confirming that the bank statement and GL reconcile, with both the bank statement and a copy of the ERP table attached so the controller has the source documents on file.

**Q: What if the balances don't match?**

Kognitos sends a different email — an “unable to reconcile as of today” notice — that includes both the ERP table and the bank statement side by side, so the controller has everything they need to investigate.

**Q: Is this part of the broader record-to-report process?**

Yes. The video frames bank statement reconciliation as one step in the record-to-report (R2R) process. The same English-defined approach extends to other R2R sub-processes inside Kognitos.
